Gordi‘s debut album, Resevoir, is one of my most anticipated albums of the year and we are getting ever closer to its release date, August 25th! For the past several months, Gordi has given us different tastes of the LP, ranging from the experimental “Heaven I Know” to the more straightforward “On My Side” (check them out HERE and HERE). From what we’ve heard, it’s clear Gordi has a precise vision for the album but is exploring a variety of sounds to put it together. Ahead of the release, Gordi has shared one more glimpse of what to expect in the gorgeous Bitter End. The track has Gordi at the most stripped back we’ve seen her with excellent results; a good chunk of the track is simply Gordi harmonizing with herself atop a single acoustic guitar. Even when it builds to its climax, it still has a beautiful restraint about it that draws you further in. With seven tracks still unreleased, I can’t wait to see what Gordi has in store for Reservoir! Make sure to look out for that this Friday and in the meantime enjoy her latest, “Bitter End”! I am getting so excited for Gordi‘s debut album, Reservoir, which is set to be released later this summer! The first track she shared last month, “Heaven I Know”, showed Gordi at her most experimental: trying new sounds and production tricks we hadn’t seen from her, while still putting her vocals and impeccable songwriting in the spotlight. This time around, on recently shared “On My Side”, Gordi returns more to her folk-influenced roots that we saw on her initial singles and debut EP. That being said, Gordi’s evolution is as an artist is so clear as “On My Side” takes some of the musical ideas we’ve seen her explore and take them to new levels. If she can maintain this level of quality across her album (which I’m confident she can), Gordi is going to have one of the strongest albums of the year! Check out “On My Side” below (or click HERE to see the excellent accompanying music video) and be on the lookout for Reservoir on August 25th!
Gordi is an artist I’ve been following for almost two years now since I heard her first handful of singles, including the excellent Can We Work It Out and Nothing’s as It Seems. She also earned a spot on my Artists to Watch for 2017 list. Gordi stands out for her ability to marry impeccable songwriting with a mix of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. The last time we heard from Gordi was over a year ago with the release of her Clever Disguise EP, which collected the aforementioned singles with several new ones to make a really stellar debut effort. Since then she’s remained relatively quiet with the exception being a live performance video released earlier this year of her new song, Heaven I Know. At the time it wasn’t clear what was to come, but yesterday she shared the studio version of the track and announced her first full length album, Reservoir, to be released August 25th. In my Artists to Watch post, I noted that she was going to open for Bon Iver on several tour dates, which seems exceedingly fitting as sonically she has a lot in common with what Justin Vernon does. This is perhaps more clear than ever on Heaven I Know. Throughout the song, Gordi utilizes brass instrumentation, choral-like harmonies, autotune, and glitchy synths. It’s definitely her most ambitious track to date. On paper it seems like it would be too much, but in practice it all works together cohesively, primarily because underlying it is the classic songwriting I mentioned before. Listen to Heaven I Know below or click HERE if you don’t have Spotify, and be on the lookout for new music as Gordi rolls out her debut album, Reservoir, on August 25th.
