It’s very rare that I listen to music off of soundtracks because it’s rare that they match the quality of a normal release from an artist. That is definitely not the case for Bored, the latest offering from rising star Billie Eilish for the new Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. Eilish has been on my radar since she released Ocean Eyes back in 2015 at the age of 13. It’s easy to fall into the trap of dwelling on the youth of a new artist, but I think it often does them a disservice. When you focus on age, you say things like “It’s a great song for ______” and qualify it, when what you should say, especially for a song like this, “It’s a great song.” Bored is an incredible song. With cinematic instrumentation and a sparse beat, it’s reminiscent of Lana Del Rey in all the right ways, but still distinctly original. Also worth pointing out is how drastically different this feels compared to her previously released single, Bellyache, which is wonderful for totally different reasons. With the quality of music Eilish has displayed in the past month alone, she has absolutely solidified herself as someone worth watching going forward. Whoever is curating the soundtrack is doing a great job because this song makes me want to watch the show. Check out Bored below, or click HERE if you don’t have Spotify.
